The name "Ganpatipule" is a combination of "Ganapati" (the local deity) and "Pule," which means sand dune. The 400-year-old idol is said to be self-manifested, or "swayambhu," meaning it "sprung up from the soil". According to legend, the idol of the deity moved to the site from its original location of Gulé after an argument with a local lady.
